On Friday, the kids' daycare had a Halloween parade and trick-or-treat in the big field adjacent to the classrooms. It was a community workday at my school, so I couldn't miss work, but Zac was able to attend. To prepare, a week or two ago I'd gotten the bag of hand-me-down costumes out of the attic. I had a Alice try on a bunch, to see what fit, and she decided to wear the dragon costume. I neglected to try anything on Simon, but just assumed the giraffe would fit him (it turns out the legs were a bit short).
The Halloween parade was scheduled for 9:30am, so Zac arrived around 9 and wrangled the kids into their costumes in the hallway. Then he dropped them off in their classrooms and went outside with the other parents to await the parade. Eventually the kids came straggling out, and the teachers tried to herd them into a parade formation, with mixed success. Both Alice and Simon did OK, in that they followed the crowd, and didn't cry or run over to Zac immediately. After they paraded around the field, then went past a row of parents handing out candy, to mimic trick-or-treating.
After the festivities, the teachers had the kids line up on a hill for a class costume photo. Alice stood in an ant hill and soon had ants crawling up her legs and biting her. Zac was holding Simon at the time, so he handed Alice off to a teacher, who stripped her costume off and saved her from the ants. Other than that, it was a pretty smooth morning.
