Simon is still out fishing in January. The bites are few and far between, but on January 12th, he caught a monster bass using a lure he found at Jordan Lake. (This is the only documented fish for this month.)

Schenck Forest
It was cold today (high of about 43) but we had to get the kids out of the house for a while. We drove to Umstead to take a family hike in the afternoon, but had trouble finding parking so we changed plans and drove to nearby Schenck Forest instead. It was a great alternative--far less crowded. It was also almost like exploring a new place. Although we'd been there before, we hadn't been there in a long time and we were able to hike much farther than before now that the kids are so much older and more capable. (We still did a really short hike, because we stop and play so much our rate is about 1 mile per hour.)

First Snow
On Thursday morning we woke up to snow. They changed the kids school to an asynchronous day, which was quite nice because it meant Zac could take the kids out to play in the snow in the morning before it melted. (I had classes to teach like normal.) It was such a pathetic snow, but they really made the most of it.

Basement Fun
The tradition these days is to go in the basement after supper. Zac plays with the kids for a while (they have all sorts of games that I don't understand) while I clean up from supper and make bedtime snack. The kids loves it, and Zac takes one for the team.
Four Wednesdays in January
This was a rough month. It was cold. The holidays were over and there was nothing to look forward to. It was a new year, but the same old mess. The pandemic is bad. The virus is mutating. The schools are still closed. Republicans are still insane.
Jan 6: Capitol attacked by Trump fanatics, white supremacists, QAnon, Proud Boys
Jan 13: Articles of Impeachment against Trump
Jan 20: Biden Inaugurated (and 1st female, POC VP)
Jane 27: GameStop shortselling shenanigans by Redditers to screw over the Hedge Funds

The Pie Tragedy
As soon as my class ended, Alice ran up to get me. A tragedy had occurred. She was getting the newly made pumpkin pie out of the fridge for a snack and somehow dropped it. The whole thing smashed. She scooped the pie off the floor, unaware that it was full of glass already and couldn't be salvaged. She also did this in her bare feet. I knew it was an accident, but sometimes when your regular life is so full of stress (I worry a lot about the political situation plus the pandemic), a broken pie can feel like the straw that breaks the camel's back. We were unreasonably sad about the shattered pie. Is this a metaphor for our democracy? Yes.

Social Distancing
Today ended up being busy. To help out our friend Natasha and to give Alice some social time, we went and got Izzy for the afternoon. First we went to White Deer Park to play for a while. Simon always plays in the fort-building area.

Jordan Lake Junk Hunt
We went to Jordan Lake for a cold but sunny hike with Anna and Jess. Zac and Simon went magnet fishing. They both love to find junk.

Joe and the Cat
Today, Joe Biden was successfully inaugurated. Trump's reign of stupidity is finally over, although we'll be feeling the impact forever, I'm sure.
But, more importantly, while we were watching the inauguration, Simon played the Goose Game with the cat. He had to roll the dice for her though. I suggested this as a joke, but he really did it. Anyway, that's why I hate the game, because a cat can play it since all you do is roll dice and move spaces. Simon loves it though.

Ritter Park & Swift Creek
Since Simon was so sad about not being able to play at the river on yesterday's hike, I promised him I would take them to a river today (since it's MLKjr day and we don't have class). So we went to Ritter Park, which is just on the other side of Hemlock Bluffs. There is a nice section of Swift Creek to play in there, and I had them both wear their waterproof boots so they could walk in the water a bit.

Spear Hunting at Hemlock Bluffs
I took the kids on a little hike to Hemlock Bluffs on Sunday. Because the schools are closed, we feel the need to try and go out for a hike at least once a weekend just for a change of scenery.
Simon got really sad at the beginning of the hike because even although I warned him it was on a boardwalk near a river that he wasn't allowed to go in, he still cried when he was confined to the boardwalk and not allowed to go in the river.
After doing the brief loop hike, I took the kids off the trail and up one of the bluffs. Then he had fun! What he likes to do these days is find a big stick and whittle it into a spear. Then he hunts for giant leaves and generally just throws the spear around and acts wild.

Kites
Cam sent a batch of really cool kites for Zac's birthday. We can't wait until we have a beautiful day to fly them!

No return...
I had long been looking forward to January 20th for two big reasons. It was the date Joe Biden would be inaugurated and the day the kids were scheduled to go back to school. I had been mentally preparing myself for the worst in both cases...that Trump would successfully carry out a coup and interrupt the peaceful transfer of power, and that the kids' school would stay closed indefinitely.
About a week before schools were set to open, the school board voted to delay reopening. Part of it is because the Covid numbers are so high and vaccination distribution is slow. Even though teachers are a priority, we haven't gotten vaccinated yet. But the other reason is that faculty and staff keep having to quarantine after exposure, and they can't get enough subs to cover classes. Online, there are people mad at the teachers and mad at the school board. I'm just mad at Trump and every single person that voted for him and enabled him. It didn't have to be this way.

I had been stealing myself for the news that they wouldn't open, but it still took the wind out of my sails when the decision was finally made. It's not good for the kids to be home so much. They need to be around other kids and have other adults in their life. They need to do class activities, and get all those social skills and mental stimulation that they get from being around other people. They need to run around on the playground and chase their friends. It really, really sucks that they've missed almost a year of in-person schooling. And of course, I know things could be far worse and that ultimately everything will be fine. But in the moment, I am devastated. I'm just so tired of everything. Tired of dragging my own students through online classes. Tired of watching my kids do online classes. Tired of being a 2nd and 4th grade teaching assistant. Tired of everyone being home all the time. Tired of having to be so much more for my kids because there are so many fewer people in their life right now. Just tired, tired, tired of it all.

On the bright side, the kids are doing ok in their online classes. The days are technically not horrible. Just relentless and never-ending. The kids fight a lot. It's probably just harder because it's January and it's cold and miserable and we can't be outside enough.

Alice and Google Forms
Alice saw me making a Google Form for my classes, and asked me to show her how to do it. Her teachers also sometimes use Google Forms for their online lessons, so she was excited to learn she had the ability to make them herself. For the rest of the day, she kept emailing me random surveys. The first ones were mainly about rules and punishments for her and Simon. But one of the later ones was about my teaching. She was really happy to have found the book picture to go with it.

Gifts from Grandpa
Nelson sent the kids letters where he wrote silly stories about them with illustrations. So here's a picture of our kids reading the letters they got in the mail by candlelight. It may be 2021, but some joys in life are classic.
