My friend Laura moved here shortly after Alice was born, and we have her over for supper on the weekends a lot. Alice went through a brief shy period, but for the most part has always been quite happy to wake up from a nap and find Laura at our house. Whenever she comes these days, Alice asks her to read books to her. Laura, being a geologist, got Alice a kids book about weird rocks. And sometimes, being a geologist, she will bring Alice specimens. Here, Alice proudly holds up halite, a rock that tastes like salt. The next day, Alice brought it to me and asked, "Mommy, do you want to taste my rock?"
